November 10 is marked by awareness of neuroendocrine tumors (NTDs). Out of every 100,000 individuals, 5 to 7 are diagnosed with NTDs. They can affect almost any organ, but are most often seen in the digestive tract, lung, and pancreas. “Because of their slow development, the symptoms take a long time to appear and, when they do, they are generally associated to the affected organ, making it difficult to make an accurate diagnosis, since they can be confused with other diseases”, alerts Aline Chaves, oncologist at Oncocentro, in Belo Horizonte (MG).
The 8th International Symposium of the Grupo Oncoclínicas dedicated a specific panel to TNEs, including the participation of international guests. The treatment algorithm for TNs of the digestive tract, the limits of the surgical approach in neuroendocrine carcinomas, their pathological and molecular profile, and the incidental findings, which represent the tumors diagnosed by endoscopy, were discussed.
