Cancer is not a single disease. It brings with it, in addition to the neoplasm itself, several complications. This requires personalized care and expert attention. In this context, the multidisciplinary approach provides a better response to cancer treatment, promoting greater safety and well-being.
According to Márcia Menezes, medical director of the Oncoclínicas Group, one of the parts of this process concerns the new resources used in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Composing the multidisciplinarity, the geneticist, for example, has an important role. During the 8th International Oncoclinics Symposium, the path of genetic tests as new avenues of cancer therapy was discussed, especially in the personalization of treatment. “Anatomopathological exams and their interaction with genomics have undergone an unimaginable evolution. As an example, we have the identification of molecular components in the cell as important markers for the diagnosis of cancer”, she says.
The program also included discussions on advances in surgical and radiotherapy techniques, in addition to the patient’s sexuality, a very sensitive topic and whose approach by the professionals of the multidisciplinary team is essential.
