Radiology is the medical specialty that studies organs and structures of the human body through images, some of them formed from the use of radiation. Over the last few years, the specialty has been called “Radiology and diagnostic imaging”, or “Imaging”, because the formation of images began to rely on other technologies, without necessarily using X-rays.
Diagnostic imaging exams include: magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, X-rays, ultrasound, mammography, and bone densitometry, among others. Besides performing the procedures, the radiologist is responsible for interpreting the images generated by them and guiding the doctor who requested the diagnosis as to the findings. With the diagnosis in hand, the doctor will be able to advise on the most appropriate treatment for the patient.
