Standard radiotherapy treatment in multiple brain metastases could be impacted by study presented at the American Society for Radiation Oncology Annual Meeting (ASTRO 2020)

Results from the Stereotactic Radiosurgery versus Whole-brain Radiation Therapy for Patients with 4-15 Brain Metastases: A Phase III Randomized Controlled Trial study, presented at the ASTRO 2020 Annual Meeting last October, suggest that radiosurgery can replace brain radiation therapy total in patients with multiple brain metastases. Such results, from the work of Li et al., show equivalent overall survival between both, but focal treatment causes less neurocognitive decline.

According to Bruna Bueno, radio-oncologist at Grupo Oncoclínicas in Rio de Janeiro, radiosurgery has already replaced whole-brain radiotherapy in cases of one to three brain metastases. However, he explains, “for patients with four or more lesions, there was still no significant evidence, from phase III randomized clinical trials, to safely standardize focal treatment”.
