TUMOR MARKERS

Tumor markers are substances, usually proteins, normally found in small amounts in the blood. However, in the presence of some types of cancer, blood levels of tumor markers may be elevated.

The blood measurement of these substances can help in the diagnosis and monitoring of certain tumors.

The main markers and examples of tumors they relate to can be seen below:

CEA tumor marker: colon, stomach, breast, pancreas, and lung

  • CA 15-3 tumor marker: breast and lung
  • CA 19-9 tumor marker: colon and pancreas
  • CA-125 tumor marker: peritoneum
  • PSA: prostate
  • Beta-HCG: testicle
  • Alpha-fetoprotein: testicle and liver
