PROTOCOL

In clinical research, the term protocol refers to the set of information related to a scientific study. This information includes the justification for conducting the study, as well as its design, objectives, methods, procedures, treatments, duration, and expected results.

Protocols also contain an explanatory note to the volunteers, in simple and accessible language, containing the main information about the study.

The term protocol has also been used in the daily life of physicians as a synonym for treatment guideline. Treatment guidelines for cancer are documents that aim to guide and standardize the management of certain diseases, which may include screening strategies, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up.

In general, treatment guidelines are drafted based on the best available scientific information, derived from clinical research with impactful results. Medicine practiced based on solid scientific information and treatment guidelines is called evidence-based medicine.
