Mucositis is the inflammation of mucous membranes, which constitute the lining tissue of various structures in the human body.
The inflammationmost commonly occurs in the organs of the digestive system, such as oral mucositis, pharynx, esophagus, rectum, and anal canal.
It is an adverse event that can result from the use of chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
Mucositis can be alleviated with medical procedures and proper nutrition, and prevention of fungal infection may also be indicated.
In some cases, it may be necessary to reduce the dose of chemotherapy and/or temporarily suspend chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Generally, this side effect improves significantly over a few weeks after the end of treatment.
