CELL DIFFERENTIATION

Cellular differentiation is the process by which cells become specialized to perform a specific function. In the anatomopathological examination, the predominant tumor cells can be classified according to their degree of differentiation:

  • Undifferentiated or poorly differentiated cells: cells that have lost their characteristics of specialization and bear little resemblance to normal cells in the body.
  • Moderately differentiated cells: cells that maintain some degree of specialization and have some similarity to normal cells in the body.
  • Well-differentiated cells: cells that preserve many characteristics of specialization and bear a strong resemblance to normal cells in the body.
