Beta-2-microglobulin is a small molecule that exists on the surface of cells. It may be present in higher levels in the presence of multiple myeloma and certain types of lymphomas, as well as some non-tumor diseases.
This protein is closely linked to the immune system and is found on the surface of many cells in the body. Analysis of B2M levels is typically done using blood and urine samples.
Beta-2-microglobulin protein can serve as an ancillary marker in the diagnosis and prognosis of certain types of tumors, indicating the amount of cancer present, as in leukemia.
